TITLE ACADEMIC MANAGER Alan Runge
2/7/00 2/5/01
Purpose:
DeVrys success depends upon meeting or exceeding Financial, Educational, Administrative, Human Resources and Marketing goals and objectives. Our work is a collective effort, and each of us should be an active participant in continuously improving DeVry as well as ourselves.
As an active participant in this process, your self-appraisal is an extremely important part, and a critical step in the performance management process. Through this process, there should be mutual recognition between you and your manager that responsibilities interact to accomplish shared accountabilities, goals, and objectives.
It also links performance to department or project and company goals, and invites shared participation in individual performance objectives. This process is forward-looking in that it focuses on your goals and objectives for the coming year as well as the longer-term strategic plan of DeVry Inc.
Self-Appraisal Instructions:
Complete
a one page (max) Self-Appraisal Performance Summary for each of your
established job accountabilities. Each sheet
contains a section for your performance appraisal and performance plan. It is not necessary to reiterate in written detail
what your job accountabilities are. Nor is it
necessary to write detailed paragraphs about the every day components of your job. What is important is that you list your key
accomplishments. You may do this in bullet
form and be ready to discuss these items during your performance appraisal meeting. Space has been provided for your manager to make
additional comments. Your manager will also
complete an Appraisal Summary.
There are two parts to this evaluation. Part A pertains to the faculty job responsibilities as outlined in the faculty job description (Ref, FP-300, Faculty Job Description). Part B pertains to your personal and job-related goals and how these goals can be implemented.
A. In
completing this portion of your self-evaluation, you should reference the faculty job
description (Ref. FP-300, Faculty Job Description) and note the specific job
responsibilities for your professorial rank.

B. The
self-evaluation provides the opportunity to communicate any other job-related activity to
your Dean. The Faculty Annual Professional
Development Plan section of the self-evaluation provides an opportunity to state your
professional and job-related goals and how these goals can be implemented in the coming
year.
1. Please comment on any additional information, relevant to your job performance that you feel exceeds the defined job description.
2. Referring to your goals defined at the previous review, identify your progress towards attaining those goals during this review period.
3. Please state your goals for personal and job development. Specifically, how can you become a more effective instructor?
4. Are there any other comments relative to your job performance?
In preparing to participate fully and productively, consider your job and your performance by asking yourself these questions:
You can use these questions as a means to learn from the past, plan for the future and improve your effectiveness and work satisfaction.
After you have completed the Self-Appraisal Performance Summary sheet, rate your performance in that accountability. Finally, attach your summary sheet(s) to the cover page, rate your overall performance, and provide your signature and date. Give this information to your manager several weeks prior to the review date to allow enough time for your manager to comment on your appraisal and prepare the Appraisal Summary.

during your performance appraisal meeting. Be
sure to address progress on developmental needs identified in last years performance
evaluation. Space has been left for
your managers comments.
In my last evaluation, I stated "my major effort for the last two terms has been on the Senior Project course, which I will continue to concentrate efforts to design as high-quality capstone course." During the last year, I've completed the foundational design of the Senior Project and promoted cross-disciplines projects. I was also able to complete initial work on the TCM Assessment. Last term, Professor Nance took over a reengineered and very detailed web-enabled TCM490 with TCM Assessment elements incorporated to meet those needs.
I've also continued to improve the web-enabled elements for TCM130. Doing so has exposed and forced a certain organizational element for material and presentations.
Since I've been determined to maintain a strict 40 hour work week, finding time to preparing for TCM250 while learning the new lab gear as well as conduct TCM130Q&X has been a challenge. I've had to find personal-time this last year for my own R&R.
Collaboration with peers in an organized team-driven project to better prepare material for several programs. I'm open to more of a student project based element in certain courses to enhance professor collaboration among courses.

In my last evaluation, I stated "I plan to work on my material organizational skills to provide a better understanding of the course objectives for students. I also plan to work on the timing of content delivery so not to "run-short" or "run-long" on the materials. This requires a better charting of the time available in and out of class to cover materials and do research on the student's part."
This term, material delivery for both TCM130 X&P are very close to the same point as last term. I only had to moderately rework quizzes and exams to fit this term's schedule. It was also nice that the book did not change and that helped a lot. Some areas, such as the web project, have been bettered defined as to their mechanics.
The uses of various Internet services (list server, chat, and email) for student communications is more effective this term; even though, there are sporadic technical difficulties.
TCM130 has seemed to settle down. The concerns I have are with the TCM250 course for this next term. I have not taken time to survey the course with Professor Diffenderfer this term. I have yet to complete my CCNA or even other exams for my MCP. I was able to talk with a few vendors at the recent ITEC Convention (including SW Bell) concerning the TCM250 equipment and possible configurations.
I'd like to synchronize the TCM250 course with my peers as well as look at student-base term projects to refine equipment configurations and documentation..

I've been more successful at using the FA department for grading assistance; which, has allowed me to use more flexible exams. I've switched to a point-base grading sheet that is designed from the same spreadsheet I've been developing for the last two years. This last year, I've consulted with Professor Singleton in developing criteria for written-exam grading.
I've started to note the evidences that are produced by the TCM130 Web Project that can be used for TCM Assessment as well as elements that can be co-worked between TCM and General Education courses.
I've not been successful at finding time to work with the general education program as much as I had hoped.
I don't plan on any changes for this next period. I plan to use the same grading method with little or no change for a while and try to streamline and document it.

It's been noted that I "click better with the student body than the faculty." This may be a strength and weakness.
Can't explain.

I've standardized the format for Senior Project data storage. A BIS Senior Project investigated the storage habit of various senior projects in the school and found that most do not make or feel an effort to keep a history of senior project work. Something that I feel is contra-productive to the overall assessment effort.
My newest efforts are working on the mechanics of the TCM assessment portion.
Most of my peeve deals with collaboration and communication efforts. I hope to see the implementation of a solid assessment training program; however, I feel that getting this done at a high enough push is going to be more difficult that thought.
I'd like to move the local assessment effort and data collection into a local web-enabled interface where the involved departments can examine data. I'd also like to see a move towards DeVry providing the Program Project (TCM130 through TCM490) services (list server, web server, FTP server, ) locally.

I chose to not start my masters this last term; but instead, take time off for personal R&R.
Burn-out .
I am not convinced that a master's degree is the best course of action for me at this time. A certification path is more to my interest.

In my last evaluation, I stated five objectives for this period.
· Work with various professors, faculty, and industry clients to produce a well defined Senior Project course as the capstone for the Telecommunications Program.
· Increase my abilities and skills in relation to the Senior Project course: project management software, professional and report writing, project management theory, teaming, and course support tool.
· Push for a separate system and Internet connection for the Senior Project course to advance its distance learning component.
· Work with various professors and faculty to produce a well defined Introductory Telecommunications course for the Telecommunications Program.
· Push for an internally driven certification classes or assistance program for DeVry faculty. Evaluate my certification goals and complete necessary certifications as I can.
I believe that I was more successful in reaching these goals compared to the previous year.
I accumulated 69 Professional Development hours and only 4 I feel I could have done without. I also received certification through 3M on Design & Estimating and Installer for their fiber Volition system.
As mentioned, even though I have seriously considered my next educational move, I have not yet started a masters or certification path. A well defined certification path that supports my teaching objectives in TCM250 or 255 would be the most beneficial.
