I did well and
survived the first year as an Assitant Professor. It was kind'a
like "Hell Week," only longer. I completed personal
training (which educated me further above my learning at DeVry as
a student) in Novell, NT, Cisco, and ATM. Then there was a lot of
expanded learning of materials in prep for class besides learning
to quickly and teach effectively. Still working on that. And the
overall fitting into the corporate culture - as one. Very
frustrating and rewarding (I got my first migrain!).
I made a presentation
on the directions of the courses; which, works in well for the
goals I have for my continued learning. I planned my desired
course load for the next year and a half to work towards my
learning objectives and plan other moves. I have also evaluated
my current posistion and re-evaluated it.
Good Luck
FACULTY SELF-EVALUATION
David Holding
January 24,1999
Assistant Professor
Lowell Tawney
DeVry Institute, Kansas City, Missouri
February 1998 to January 1999
Introduction
This is the self-evaluation of Assistant
Professor David Alan Holding. This is done in accordance with
DeVry Policies FP-300, FP 303, and Appendix D.
I intend to summarize my personal and job-related
accomplishments and goals for the past 11 months. I will also
address my personal and job-related goals for the following year.
This information will be provided under two sections: Part A,
faculty job responsibilities and Part B, Personal and job related
goals.
Part A: Faculty Job Description
In this section, I reference FP-300 (Faculty
Job Description) and briefly summarize my overall opinion of my
performance to date.
Preparation. In general, I
believe this area deals with the overall ability to
gather, retain, organize, and distribute course and
lesson materials in an effective and timely manner to
meet the course learning objective. I have spent the
first year organizing and producing material "on-the-fly."
Although, this approach seemed necessary during the first
year as I learned to teach at the college level, it is
not conducive for the long term. In reference to FP 300.1.1.1,
my opinion for this area is satisfactory.
Delivery. In general, I believe
this area deals with the ability to encourage and promote
learning through diverse delivery methods in a
professional manner. In reference to FP 300.1.1.2, my
overall opinion for this area is satisfactory.
Evaluation Techniques and Grading. In
general, I believe this area deals with the ability to
use a variety of tools to measure and improve learning.
During my first year, I have used a variety of tools to
evaluate learning, which included general scantron
testing, essay testing, lab papers, and student comment
sheets. In reference to FP 300.1.1.3, my opinion for this
area is satisfactory.
Student Interaction/Customer
Awareness. In general, I believe this area deals with
the ability to understand and respond to the students
needs and concerns in a professional manner. I believe I
have conducted myself in a professional manner with
respect to all students. In reference to FP 300.1.1.4, my
overall opinion for this area is above average.
Administrative. In general, I
believe this area deals with the ability to perform the
record keeping and administrative communications
necessary to our institute in a timely manner. I have
used available tools to keep necessary records and
communicate effectively with both faculty and students. I
have also participated with administrative functions and
provided comments and suggestions that I feel would
benefit the institute as a whole. In reference to FP 300.1.1.5,
my overall opinion for this area is above average.
Professional. In general, I
believe this area deals with items related to both my
teaching profession and the technical profession that I
teach. I feel more of a professional teacher learning the
technical side of telecommunications rather than an
experienced technical telecommunications major learning
to teach. In reference to FP 300.1.1.6, my opinion for
this area is above average.
During the past year, I
attended the following courses to develop
specific technical knowledge and skills,
Novell 4.11
Administration. Certificate received and
passed CNA test.
During the past year, I
attended three seminars that focused on teaching
effectiveness, techniques and styles.
During the past year, I
attended a workshop that focused on a relative
technology: ATM.
During the past year, I have
consulted with faculty and students for comments
and feedback on my professional performance.
My overall opinion on my job description
performance is "above average." I believe that I am
above average in my ability to learn and teach, but have allowed
myself to have been over challenged during the first year. I also
believe that I have "tried too hard" and have tried to
"teach too much." It is my goal to better organize my
course plans prior to the beginning of terms.
Part B: Personal and Job Related
Goals
In this section, I will state my personal
and professional job-related goals and how I intend to implement
these goals during the next year. I spend a majority of my time
considering how to improve my current teaching techniques and
ability. This includes improvements in both my technical
knowledge and teaching skills.
I will work with my Dean to develop a
two-year plan that includes certification training for
both the technical and teaching side as well as a
personal sabbatical for medical work.
I will complete tests for which I have
certified classes: CNA certificate test, two MCP
certification tests, and one Cicso Router Configuration
test.
I also intend to develop a flexible
class/lab plan for the courses that I have instructed
this last year (TCM13O, TCM32O, TCM34O, TCM345, and TCM423)
in order to be better prepared for instruction.
I intend to devote more up-front time
for course prep; especially, between terms in order to
avoid organizing and producing material "on-the-fly."
Some areas I intend to concentrate on for improvement
include the following
Developing better in-class activities
and homework assignment that benefit learning. I intend
to use more tools such as Internet research, Computer
Based Training, and lab testing.
Teaching course objectives according
to curriculum guides and within defined time frames. This
requires a better understanding of the amount of
information I can effectively cover for a given time in
class and lab over the term.
Developing a better use of texts and
supplemental material. This requires me to understand the
layout of the course textbook and use it to effectively
outline material.
Clearly stating lesson objectives to
the classes and meeting those objectives. This requires a
good understanding of the use of the corporate course
objectives and how to use it to include and exclude
material from a particular course. I am apt to provide
too much information with inadequate organization or
structure for the average student. I intend to work on
reducing this workload while increasing the quality of
education I can provide.
Presenting material in a clearer and
more organized manner for better-structured learning. I
intend to develop a more concise outline for course
instruction with which I can work instead of trying to
meet every objective outlined by the course objections as
provided by corporate headquarters.
Pace development and delivery of
material to avoid overworking myself and over burdening
the students. I have found some of my difficulties during
the first year is not only pacing myself in the amount of
work I make from each course, but also in pacing the
amount of information and work I give to students.
I have found that certain subjects are
more lab-dependent than others; thus, each course
requires different techniques. Some classes are more
hands-on lab dependent while others require more
classroom theory instruction. However, all require an
adherence on a textbook and well-structured delivery of
learning. I intend to work with my peers to develop and
share material to better develop the class to lab balance
and learning.
I also plan to continue to develop the
software tools I use for grading evaluation, work
evaluation, and material development. I intend to
increase my personal study speed and skills to better my
text book research and use of material in class.
Summary
I feel that I have performed above average
during my first year of teaching; however, there is always room
for improvement. During the next year, I intend to concentrate on
reducing the workload required to teach effectively and improve
the quality of teaching by working on the items mentioned in Part
A and Part B of this evaluation. I have found this first year to
be a challenge that proved to be larger than perceived and more
stressful than anticipated; however, it was a beneficial and
learning experience. I intend to meet the challenge for this next
year by better structuring my efforts and time in order to reduce
the work and stress inherent in this profession.
